Statement from Sarah Schulman (Writer and Professor at City University of New York))

The world looks with horror and responsibility at the persecution of lesbian, gay and bisexual people in Russia. While we must support the rights of all people to live in their homes with dignity, the persecution by the Russian government, in allegiance with the Orthodox church and violent right-wing nationalists, has forced many Russian queer people to seek refuge and asylum abroad. We must support Irinia Putilova’s request to the British government for asylum and oppose any effort to deport her to certain arrest in Russia.
